Musanze is the nearby town and is the largest city up to the north -western part of Rwanda in Ruhengeri district. It covers an area of about 160 km². The park neighbors Uganda in the North and in the west by Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Volcanoes National Park is where Dian Fossy was based and where the film about her works was made (gorillas in the mist). Due to her works of habituating the mountain gorillas, gorillas become the major tourist attraction in Rwanda and one of the major sources of revenue to the country. It houses almost a half of the world’s population, over 380 live in this park only and Rwanda is regarded the best gorilla safari destination in the world.

Rwanda currently has about 10 habituated gorilla groups ready for tracking and for each gorilla group, a maximum of 8 persons are allowed to track each day.
